About:

Terra Sage Wallin (she/they) is an interdisciplinary scholar of philosophy, language, religion, culture, and environment. She graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 2022 with a BA in Environmental Studies and Philosophy with a focus on Native American Traditional Ecological Knowledges, or TEK.

In community with both UCSB’s American Indian and Indigenous Students’ Association (AIISA) and the Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation, Terra Sage collaborated on the development of ES 194TK, a new, two-unit lab course that integrates the knowledges of TEK into hands-on practice. The course is community-led and facilitated by a team of undergraduate students, and as of Fall 2024 the course is in its fifth iteration. The TEK Lab Mentorship Program, as co-founded by Terra Sage, identifies, mentors, and trains student leaders in the AIIS/Environmental Humanities to serve as a member of the Leadership Team for ES 194TK. Interested undergraduate students can reach out via email for more information.

As an undergraduate, Terra Sage served as an officer for UCSB’s American Indian and Indigenous Students’ Association (AIISA), an officer for the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), and an undergraduate representative for the American Indian and Indigenous Academic Council (AIICAC), whose mission is the development and continued support of a new American Indian and Indigenous Studies department and major at UC Santa Barbara. She received the 2023 Community Contribution Award at the 48th Annual Harvest Dinner, honored for her co-creation and continued mentorship of the ES 194TK course. She has continued to work in the Three Sisters and Four Directions Gardens on campus as well as the Wetlands Space as part of a collaborative restoration with the Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation.

As a graduate student, Terra Sage is honored to serve as a graduate student representative on the American Indian and Indigenous Academic Council (AIICAC). She works in the American Indian and Indigenous Collective (AIIC) Center on campus, coordinating Center events, student programming, and logistics. In the Fall of 2024, Terra Sage will be serving as a TA for RS 14, Intro to Native American Religious Traditions.

Her research interests include American Christianity and Popular Culture, Contemporary Christian Music, Mormonism and Mormon Culture, Indigenous Ecological Knowledges, Pedagogy, Colonialism and the Academy, and Intersectional Analysis. Her current research focus is on the intersections of American Christianity, American Culture, Indigenous Knowledges, and Environmental Thought.
